Karen’s Kumihimo Painting with Beads Necklace Kits

I call this PAINTING WITH BEADS and I love working this way. This is a unique approach to KUMIHIMO and opens all kinds of door for endless creativity. The necklaces pictured are the first two in a Series of PAINTING WTH BEADS patterns that I am creating and including in kits. The beaded portion of the necklace is approximately 17″ and the overall length can be lengthened or shortened either by eliminating a section of color (shorter option) and a longer option is determined by the placement of your end caps on the braided sections at the start and finish of the braid.

Kumihimo Split Braid “Glazed Donut” Necklace Kits

This is a great “Class in a Kit”. The Kumihimo Split Braid is a versatile technique with a variety of end uses. In this kit you will learn the technique for splitting a 16 strand braid. You will then braid an 8 strand section which will serve as the loop to attach your donut pendant. Then you will rejoin and continue with the rest of your 16 strand braid. Your kit contains four skeins of DMC embroidery floss in 4 colors that coordinate with the Glazed Donut. It is 100% cotton, 100% colorfast and double mercerized for extra sheen. I LOVE the vibrant colors. The diameter of the finished cord pairs nicely with a 4mm end cap. Some people like to wear this necklace short and others like it longer. I have provided enough cord to make up to a 26″ necklace.

Kumihimo Edge Bead Necklace Kit Edge Bead Necklace Collection

I call this “Duo” because there are beads on both sides of the braid. It’s a quick braid with a great look and lots of appeal. You can make it more casual with matte beads or more dressy with the sparkling silver lined beads. Whichever you choose, you’ll love it. The style of this necklace is well suited for shorter lengths however I have provided enough material in the kit to make up to a 20” necklace; my preference is closer to 17”. Finished lengths include end caps & closure. The instructions are written for the longest length (20”) but you can easily adjust the size to any length simply by choosing where you want to finish & trim the end sections. You can also make bracelets using the same technique.

Kumihimo Magatama Fringe Necklace

I call this the Kumihimo Magatama Fringe Necklace because the Magatama beads  look like fringe!  This necklace is unique because the beads on the inner edge are different from the beads on the outer edge. The style of this necklace is well suited for shorter lengths however, I have provided enough material in the kit to make up to a 20” necklace. Reverse Spiral Sampler KitReverse Spiral Braid

I love the Reverse Spiral. I certainly didn’t invent it but I did write some instructions that have been pretty easy for immediate success. This kit is a sampler kit. You will learn the Reverse Spiral technique.

Kumihimo Candy Cane Ornaments Kit

The first time I made Kumihimo Candy Canes was for an ornament exchange in my book club. Since then I have had many requests to put together a kit. The ingredients are simple and the results are great. Once you’ve made a few, you can decide how you want to embellish your candy canes, i.e. add beads, little jingle bells, bows, etc. I’m giving you a start on the basics and I hope you add your own creative touches. Have fun!

The Kumihimo Candy Cane Kit contains enough materials to make 3 candy canes. The candy cane stick measures 9″ and when shaped into a candy cane the finished length is about 6 1/2″.

With this class-in-a-kit, you’ll learn how to start your braid with a Lark’s Head Knot, braid around a core (in this case a wire stem) and you’ll learn a versatile wrapping technique to finish off the tassel.

Click on photo for a bigger view!

Kit includes:

- 30 yards of “Petite” Satin Cord; Red, Green and White
- Three 9″ wire stem cores
-  Instructions with lots of step-by-step color photos
- Patterns for 3 different 12 Strand Spiral Braids

Kumihimo Candy Cane Kit (makes 3)  $14.00

  • 11. whataknit  |  March 9, 2012 at 6:28 am

    Diane,
The Edge Bead Kit Necklace kit is very easy, however, you do need to have some knowledge of how to place or “drop” beads into you Kumihimo. It’s very easy and I am happy to help you. Give it a try.

Thanks so much for sending my order. I did the edge bead necklace while I was in the hospital and actually sold it to one of the nurses and have orders for more!! I’m working on them now. The way the different threads and beads make them look is amazing. They come out so unique. I love it!!!! Can’t wait to see your new kits.

  • 15. whataknit  |  March 24, 2012 at 2:52 pm

    Hi Debbie,
Not all of the necklaces in the slideshow are in kits. Is there any one in particular that you are interested in and I can let you know if I plan to make a kit?

  • 16. jagfann  |  April 2, 2012 at 10:35 pm

I’d love to see kits for different braids with beads on all threads, maybe a flat braid or the square braid. I have tried to get the square braid. With one color like a trim row the other color inside, 8 threads, just can’t get it to come out right.
Thanks for all your help, past, present and future.
    Tammy

  • 17. jagfann  |  April 3, 2012 at 9:19 am

Putting together another order. Love the new colorways! Any more new kits in the future? I’d love to see different braids with beads on all threads. Maybe square or flat. I’d love to see the flat one that has the boarder one color with the beads inside another also the flat braid with hearts.
    Thanks so much
    Tammy

  • 18. Judy Voce  |  May 1, 2012 at 1:04 pm

Love the kits, but would also like to be able to purchase just the instructions. Do you sell just the instructions?

  • 19. Kimmy  |  May 2, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Love the news letter! Have to get a new project going. Going to try another edge bead necklace gave the last one away!

  • 20. whataknit  |  May 4, 2012 at 4:42 pm

    Hi Judy,
My patterns are only available in the kits. Once a kit “retires” I may make the pattern available for purchase.
    Happy Braiding,
    Karen
