The Craft Yarn Council of America instituted a number system for yarn gauges with recommendations for needle size. This information is only a guideline and, as always, swatching is the key to your success.
Super Fine “1″ (Lace, Fingering, Sock)
Avg. Gauge knitted over 4″: 27 – 32 sts
US Needle: 1 – 3
Metric Needle: 2.25 mm - 3.25 mm
Fine “2″ (Sport, Baby)
Avg. Gauge knitted over 4″: 23 - 26 sts
US Needle: 3 – 5
Metric Needle: 3.25 mm - 3.75 mm
Light “3″ (DK, Light Worsted)
Avg. Gauge knitted over 4″: 21 - 24 sts
US Needle: 5 – 7
Metric Needle: 3.75 mm - 4.5 mm
Medium “4″ (Worsted, Aran, Afghan)
Avg. Gauge knitted over 4″: 16 – 20 sts
US Needle: 7 – 9
Metric Needle: 4.5 mm – 5.5 mm
Bulky “5″ (Chunky, Craft, Rug)
Avg. Gauge knitted over 4″: 12 – 15 sts
US Needle: 9 – 11
Metric Needle: 5.5 mm - 8.0 mm
Super Bulky “6″ (Bulky, Roving)
Avg. Gauge knitted over 4″: 6 – 11 sts
US Needle: ll and larger
Metric Needle: 8.0 mm and larger
